What You Should Know About Tumor Removal Costs
Tumor removal pricing depends on location, size, and whether clean margins are needed. A small skin mass on the trunk: $500-$1,000. A mass near the eye or joint requiring wide margins: $1,500-$3,000. Internal (abdominal or chest) tumors: $2,500-$5,000+. Your bill should reflect the complexity.
Biopsy/histopathology costs $150-$400 on top of surgery. It's tempting to skip it. Don't. The biopsy tells you whether the mass is benign (done) or malignant (may need further treatment). Removing a mass without checking it is half the job.
Some tumors recur even after clean removal. Mast cell tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, and certain carcinomas have recurrence rates of 15-40%. If your vet recommends wide surgical margins (more tissue removed), the higher cost prevents a second surgery. First surgery with wide margins: $1,500-$3,000. Second surgery after recurrence: $2,000-$4,000+.
