What You Should Know About Microchip Costs
The microchip itself costs your vet $5-$10. The procedure takes under 60 seconds and requires no anesthesia. If you're being charged more than $75 at a regular vet, you're paying a significant markup. Humane societies and vaccine clinics offer chips for $10-$25.
The chip is useless without registration. Make sure your vet registered the chip in a national database (HomeAgain, AKC Reunite, or similar). Registration fees run $15-$25 and last the pet's lifetime. If you paid $55+ and registration isn't included, ask.
Microchipped dogs are returned to their owners 52% of the time vs. 22% for dogs without chips. Microchipped cats are returned 39% of the time vs. under 2% for unchipped cats. The $55 is worth it.
