What You Should Know About Blood Panel Costs
Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is frequently marked up 2-4x at some clinics. The test itself costs the clinic $30-$50 to run, but bills of $150-$250 are common. If you're quoted more than $150 for a basic panel, ask if they'll accept results from an outside lab.
A 'basic panel' (CBC + basic chemistry) tells your vet about red/white blood cell counts, kidney values, and liver enzymes. A 'comprehensive panel' adds thyroid, pancreatic enzymes, and electrolytes. Senior wellness panels add urinalysis. Know which panel you're getting before you agree.
In-house labs (results in 15 minutes) cost 20-40% more than reference labs (results in 24-48 hours). If it's not urgent, ask your vet to send samples to Idexx or Antech. The savings are real.
