Cost to Induce Vomiting at Vet: $250–$600 (2026 Prices)

Inducing vomiting at the vet costs $250–$400 during business hours and $400–$800 at an emergency clinic. The procedure itself (apomorphine injection) is cheap ($50–$150). The exam fee ($100–$250) is what drives the cost. Vets can only safely induce vomiting within 1–2 hours of ingestion. After that, the substance has moved past the stomach and vomiting won't help.

What Affects the Cost

  • Daytime vet visit: exam ($50–$80) + apomorphine injection ($50–$150) + monitoring ($50–$100) = $250–$400 total.
  • After-hours emergency clinic: emergency exam ($100–$250) + apomorphine ($50–$150) + monitoring = $400–$800. The emergency exam fee is the biggest difference.
  • Apomorphine is the standard drug vets use. It works in 3–5 minutes and is much safer and more reliable than hydrogen peroxide. Cats cannot be given apomorphine — vets use dexmedetomidine instead.
  • The 1–2 hour window is real. After that, the toxin has left the stomach and entered the intestines. Inducing vomiting after 2 hours is useless and potentially dangerous. If you're past the window, treatment shifts to IV fluids, activated charcoal, and symptom management ($800–$2,000+).
  • Common reasons for induced vomiting: chocolate, xylitol (sugar-free gum), grapes/raisins, ibuprofen, rat poison, antifreeze, and various household chemicals.
  • If your vet is closed, call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435, $95 fee) before driving to an emergency clinic. They can tell you if the amount ingested actually requires treatment. Sometimes the answer is 'monitor at home.' That saves you an $800 ER bill.

Common Questions

How much does it cost for a vet to induce vomiting?
Inducing vomiting at a vet costs $250–$400 during regular hours and $400–$800 at an emergency clinic after hours. The breakdown: exam fee ($50–$250 depending on regular vs emergency vet), apomorphine injection ($50–$150), and monitoring ($50–$100). If activated charcoal or IV fluids are needed afterward, expect $400–$1,000 more. The emergency clinic exam fee is the single biggest cost driver.
Can I make my dog throw up at home instead of going to the vet?
Hydrogen peroxide (3%, 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight, max 3 tablespoons) can induce vomiting at home, but it's not recommended as a first choice. The dosing is easy to get wrong, it can cause chemical burns to the esophagus, and it doesn't always work. Vets use apomorphine, which works within 3–5 minutes with fewer side effects. If you're within 30 minutes of a vet and the ingestion happened within 1–2 hours, go to the vet. Call poison control first either way.
How long after eating something toxic can a vet induce vomiting?
Vets can only effectively induce vomiting within 1–2 hours of ingestion. After 2 hours, most of the substance has moved from the stomach into the intestines, making vomiting ineffective. Some exceptions: if the dog ate a large volume, gastric emptying can be slower and the window slightly longer. For sharp objects, batteries, or caustic substances, vomiting should never be induced regardless of timing — it causes more damage coming back up.
