Is This a Vet Emergency?

Pick your pet's main symptom. Answer two follow-up questions. We'll tell you whether to go now, today, or wait — and what it'll likely cost.

When in doubt, call the emergency vet. The phone call is free. They can tell you in 2 minutes whether your pet needs to come in. This tool is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

What kind of pet?

ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435

If your pet ate something suspicious, call this number first. They'll tell you whether it's dangerous and whether you need to go in. Open 24/7. A $95 consultation fee may apply — worth it versus the cost of a wrong call.

Always Go Immediately

These symptoms are never a "wait and see." Go directly to an emergency vet.

  • Can't breathe — gasping, neck extended, open-mouth breathing (cats)
  • Pale, white, or blue gums — sign of shock or internal bleeding
  • Bloat signs — distended belly + unproductive retching (dogs)
  • Male cat can't urinate — blockage is fatal within 24–48 hours
  • Seizure lasting over 5 min — or multiple seizures in one hour
  • Hit by car, severe fall — internal injuries aren't always visible
  • Collapsed or unconscious — even if they come around quickly
  • Suspected poisoning within 2 hrs — before symptoms develop

Usually Can Wait Until Morning

These often don't need an emergency clinic. A same-day appointment with your regular vet is usually the right move. Monitor overnight and go in if things get worse.

  • Limping but still putting weight on the leg
  • Vomited once or twice, no blood, acting mostly normal
  • Mild lethargy without other symptoms
  • Small superficial cut, not actively bleeding
  • Mild eye discharge without squinting or trauma
  • Skipped a meal, drinking normally
  • Scratching or licking at a spot (not bleeding, not swollen)

Emergency Vet Cost by Path

Emergency clinic rates. Daytime regular vet runs 40–60% less for the same procedures.
