Does Pet Insurance Cover CT Scan?
CT scans ordered to diagnose or stage a covered illness or injury are reimbursable. CTs are faster and less expensive than MRIs and are increasingly used for cancer staging, trauma assessment, and nasal/sinus conditions.
CT Scan Cost: With vs. Without Insurance
Assumes $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement (standard plan terms)
What Pet Insurance Covers
CT for cancer staging, trauma assessment, nasal/sinus disease, skull and spine evaluation. Anesthesia included. Contrast CT (with contrast agent) is covered when ordered for a covered condition.
What's Excluded
CT for pre-existing condition monitoring. Screening CT without a specific diagnostic indication.
Waiting Period
14-day illness waiting period. Orthopedic or surgical CT may apply 6-month waiting on select plans.
Breed-Specific Considerations
Brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs) frequently need nasal and airway CT for BOAS evaluation. Some plans add airway surgery restrictions for these breeds — confirm before enrolling.

The Pre-Existing Condition Rule
Pet insurance doesn't cover conditions that existed before your policy started. That means anything in your pet's vet records — a limp noted once, an ear infection two years ago, a lump your vet mentioned — can become an exclusion. Enroll before your pet has any documented health problems to get the most out of your coverage.
