HGE Treatment Cost in Dogs 2026: $500–$3,500 (What to Expect)

HGE (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis) — now formally called AHDS (Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome) — is a sudden, severe GI illness in dogs. Bright red bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy. It looks alarming and it is: dogs can become dangerously dehydrated within hours. The bill depends entirely on how fast you get there. Mild cases caught early: $500–$1,200. Cases needing 1–2 nights of hospitalization: $1,000–$2,000. Severe cases with 2–3+ nights of IV care: $2,000–$3,500.

Vet procedure costs vary by pet size, location, and clinic type — specialty practices charge 40–80% more than general practitioners for the same procedure. Urban California and New York run 30–50% above national averages. Teaching hospitals and humane societies perform the same procedures at 30–50% below private vet prices. Select your state above for a location-adjusted estimate.

  • The main cost driver is hospitalization time: The treatment is IV fluids — aggressive rehydration. Each night in hospital adds $400–$1,000 to the bill. Getting to the vet within a few hours of first symptoms is the single biggest factor in keeping costs manageable.
  • Diagnostics are unavoidable: Even if your vet suspects HGE immediately, they'll run bloodwork ($80–$200) and sometimes an X-ray ($100–$250) to rule out intestinal obstruction, which has similar symptoms but requires surgery.
  • Small breeds are at higher risk: Dachshunds, Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, and Miniature Poodles get HGE far more often than large breeds. If you have one of these breeds, recognize the symptoms early.
  • Recovery is fast with treatment: Most dogs recover fully in 3–5 days. This is NOT a disease that requires surgery or long-term care — it's expensive because of hospitalization, not complexity.
  • It can recur: Some dogs have multiple HGE episodes. Pet insurance that covers emergency visits pays for itself fast in these cases.

Common Questions

How much does HGE treatment cost?
HGE (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis, now called AHDS) treatment costs depend on severity. Mild cases caught within a few hours of symptom onset: $500–$1,200, often including exam ($100–$250), bloodwork ($80–$200), fluids and medications. Moderate cases requiring 1–2 nights of hospitalization with IV fluids: $1,000–$2,000. Severe cases needing 2–3+ nights of intensive supportive care: $2,000–$3,500. The main treatment is aggressive IV fluid rehydration — hospitalization cost is the biggest driver. California and New York run 25–35% above these averages.
What is HGE in dogs and what causes it?
HGE (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis) — now formally renamed AHDS (Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome) — is a sudden illness causing explosive bloody diarrhea and vomiting in dogs. The diarrhea is typically bright red or looks like raspberry jam, not digested blood. The cause is still unclear in most cases. Dietary indiscretion, stress, changes in gut bacteria, or clostridial toxins are suspected triggers. It is NOT contagious between pets. Small breeds get it far more often than large breeds, especially Dachshunds, Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, and Miniature Poodles.
How do I know if my dog has HGE?
Signs of HGE in dogs: sudden onset of large amounts of bloody diarrhea (bright red, often described as raspberry jam), vomiting, lethargy, and weakness. The hallmark is the volume and suddenness — a seemingly healthy dog has a massive bloody bowel movement out of nowhere. Fever is not always present. If your dog is showing these signs, go to the vet same day — do not wait. Dehydration from fluid loss can become life-threatening within hours. HGE is diagnosed by the clinical picture plus bloodwork showing a specific pattern of elevated hematocrit (packed cell volume).
How is HGE treated at the vet?
HGE treatment centers on IV fluid therapy to reverse dehydration and restore blood volume. The vet will also give anti-nausea medications (maropitant/Cerenia, ondansetron), often withhold food for 12–24 hours, then introduce a bland diet. Antibiotics are not always needed — the current thinking is that antibiotics may not improve outcomes and may disrupt gut bacteria recovery. Most dogs are hospitalized for 1–3 days depending on how dehydrated they were at presentation. Dogs that get fluids quickly often bounce back faster and cost less to treat.
Can a dog survive HGE without treatment?
HGE can be fatal without treatment. The danger is not the GI inflammation itself but the rapid fluid loss — dogs can lose enough blood plasma into their intestines to develop hypovolemic shock. Mortality in untreated cases is significant. With prompt veterinary treatment, most dogs recover fully in 3–5 days. Recovery prognosis is excellent when treatment begins early. Dogs that are already severely dehydrated at presentation have longer, more expensive hospital stays and higher risk. This is a same-day emergency, not a condition to monitor overnight.
