Gastropexy Cost for Dogs: $400–$1,200 (Bloat Prevention)

A prophylactic gastropexy costs $400–$1,200 as a standalone procedure, or $200–$500 when added to a spay or neuter. It tacks the stomach to the body wall, preventing the deadly twist (GDV/bloat) that kills 30% of dogs who experience it, even with emergency surgery. For large, deep-chested breeds, this is the single most cost-effective preventive surgery in veterinary medicine.

What Affects the Cost

  • Emergency GDV surgery costs $3,000–$8,000 with a 15–30% mortality rate. Preventive gastropexy at $400–$1,200 eliminates most of that risk.
  • Best done during spay/neuter surgery when the abdomen is already open. Adding it costs $200–$500 more and adds 15–20 minutes to the procedure.
  • Laparoscopic gastropexy ($800–$1,500) is the minimally invasive option: two small incisions, faster recovery, same effectiveness. Available at most specialty centers.
  • High-risk breeds: Great Danes (42% lifetime GDV risk), Standard Poodles, German Shepherds, Irish Setters, Weimaraners, Saint Bernards, Gordon Setters, and any deep-chested breed over 50 lbs.
  • Does NOT prevent bloat (stomach distension), only the life-threatening twist (volvulus). Dogs can still bloat after gastropexy but the stomach stays in place.

Common Questions

How much does a gastropexy cost for a dog?
Prophylactic gastropexy costs $400–$1,200 as a standalone surgery in 2026. When performed during a spay or neuter (the most common approach), it adds $200–$500 to the total bill. Laparoscopic gastropexy at a specialty center costs $800–$1,500 but offers faster recovery (1–2 days vs. 5–7 days). Compare this to emergency GDV surgery at $3,000–$8,000 with a 15–30% mortality rate.
Which dog breeds should get a gastropexy?
Any large or giant breed dog with a deep, narrow chest. Great Danes have the highest lifetime risk at 42%. Other high-risk breeds: Standard Poodles, German Shepherds, Irish Setters, Weimaraners, Saint Bernards, Gordon Setters, Doberman Pinschers, and Old English Sheepdogs. Mixed breed dogs with deep chests are also at risk. If your dog weighs over 50 lbs and has a visibly deep chest, discuss gastropexy with your vet.
When should a dog get a gastropexy?
The best time is during spay or neuter surgery, typically at 6–12 months. The abdomen is already open, the dog is already under anesthesia, and the add-on cost is minimal ($200–$500). If your dog is already spayed or neutered, a standalone or laparoscopic gastropexy can be done at any age. There is no upper age limit, but younger dogs recover faster.
