Does Pet Insurance Cover Allergy Testing?

Covered

Blood allergy panels and intradermal skin testing are covered under accident & illness plans when allergies are diagnosed as a new illness. At $200–$600, allergy testing is one of the higher-value diagnostic coverages.

Allergy Testing Cost: With vs. Without Insurance

Assumes $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement (standard plan terms)

Without Insurance
$300
Full amount due at clinic
With Insurance (est.)
$300
Below deductible — you pay in full

What Pet Insurance Covers

Blood RAST/ELISA panels for environmental or food allergens. Intradermal skin testing at a dermatology specialist. Allergy immunotherapy (desensitization shots) is also covered on most plans.

What's Excluded

Pre-existing allergies documented before policy enrollment. Food elimination trials are typically not reimbursable.

Waiting Period

14-day illness waiting period. Allergy-related conditions (ear infections, skin infections) have the same 14-day window.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Labs, Golden Retrievers, Bulldogs, and West Highland White Terriers have significantly higher allergy rates. Enrolling early before symptoms appear is critical — documented itching/skin issues before enrollment will trigger pre-existing condition exclusions.

The Pre-Existing Condition Rule

Pet insurance doesn't cover conditions that existed before your policy started. That means anything in your pet's vet records — a limp noted once, an ear infection two years ago, a lump your vet mentioned — can become an exclusion. Enroll before your pet has any documented health problems to get the most out of your coverage.
