Vet Visit Cost by Type: Wellness vs Urgent Care vs Emergency

Not all vet visits cost the same. A wellness check runs $50–$80. Urgent care is $100–$200. Emergency clinics start at $100–$250 just to walk in. Here's exactly what each visit type costs and what you get for the money.

🏥

Wellness Visit

$50–$80

Exam only, before add-ons

Scheduled in advance. Annual or bi-annual. Preventive care: weight check, heart and lungs, eyes, ears, skin. No illness or injury.

⚕️

Urgent Care / Sick Visit

$75–$200

Exam + likely diagnostics

Same-day or next-day appointment at your regular vet. For illnesses and non-life-threatening problems: limping, vomiting, skin issues, ear infections.

🚨

Emergency Clinic

$300–$2,000+

Exam + triage + treatment

After-hours or acute crises. For life-threatening emergencies: bloat, trauma, suspected poisoning, respiratory distress. Cannot wait until morning.

$50–$80

Wellness exam, national average, exam only

What's included

Physical examination: weight, heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, skin.

Routine visits. Schedule in advance at your regular vet.

What Each Visit Type Actually Includes

WELLNESS Annual Wellness Visit

The checkup your vet wants you to do every year even when nothing's wrong. Detects problems early, keeps vaccines current, and gives the vet a baseline for your pet's normal.

Physical exam $50–$80
Core vaccines (per vaccine) $15–$50 each
Heartworm test $35–$75
Fecal test $25–$55
Basic bloodwork (if recommended) $80–$200
Typical full annual visit (dogs) $250–$500

What the vet checks

  • • Weight and body condition score
  • • Heart rate and rhythm
  • • Lung sounds
  • • Eyes, ears, and teeth
  • • Skin and coat condition
  • • Abdomen palpation
  • • Lymph nodes
  • • Musculoskeletal check (gait, joints)

Cats: exams are cheaper ($45–$75) and they need fewer vaccines than dogs. Indoor-only cats may skip some vaccines entirely.

URGENT CARE Sick Visit at Your Regular Vet

A same-day or next-day appointment for something that's wrong but isn't a life-threatening emergency. Your regular vet during normal hours. These visits almost always require diagnostics on top of the exam fee.

Sick/problem exam fee $50–$100
Basic bloodwork (almost always ordered) $80–$200
Urinalysis (if kidney/bladder suspected) $30–$75
X-rays (1–2 views) $100–$300
Prescription medications $20–$100
Typical sick visit total $250–$700

Common sick visit reasons

  • • Vomiting or diarrhea (1–2 days)
  • • Limping or lameness
  • • Ear infection (scratching, head shaking)
  • • Skin rash, hot spot, or hair loss
  • • Urinary issues (straining, accidents)
  • • Eye discharge or redness
  • • Lethargy without obvious cause
  • • Coughing or sneezing

Sick visits usually can't be scheduled more than a day or two out — most practices hold same-day slots. If your vet can't see you and symptoms are worsening, consider an urgent care vet clinic (not emergency).

EMERGENCY Emergency Vet Clinic (After-Hours or Acute Crisis)

Separate facility, staffed 24/7. You pay a premium for immediate availability. The exam fee alone is $100–$250 — before anything is done. Everything costs more here.

Emergency exam / triage fee $100–$250
Bloodwork (almost always required) $150–$350
IV catheter and fluids $150–$400
X-rays (2–3 views) $200–$500
Hospitalization (per night) $500–$1,500
Typical ER visit total $800–$2,000+

Go to the ER for:

  • • Suspected bloat / distended abdomen
  • • Difficulty breathing or blue gums
  • • Trauma (hit by car, fall, dog attack)
  • • Toxin ingestion (especially xylitol, antifreeze, grapes)
  • • Urinary blockage (cat straining with no output)
  • • Seizures or collapse
  • • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • • Loss of consciousness
Tip: After-hours surcharges add 50–100% to all procedures at emergency clinics. The same X-ray that costs $150 during regular hours may cost $250–$300 at midnight. This is unavoidable for real emergencies but worth knowing.

Common Questions

How much does a routine vet visit cost?

A routine wellness exam costs $50–$80 for dogs and $45–$75 for cats at most suburban private clinics. That's just the exam fee. A full annual visit with exam, vaccines, heartworm test, fecal test, and flea prevention runs $250–$500 for adult dogs. Senior dogs (7+) often need bloodwork too, pushing costs to $350–$700. Urban vets in high-cost cities (NYC, LA, San Francisco) charge $80–$130 for the exam alone.

What is the difference between an urgent care vet and an emergency vet?

An urgent care vet sees sick pets same-day or next-day for non-life-threatening issues — limping, vomiting, ear infections, skin problems. It's your regular vet during normal hours, or a stand-alone urgent care clinic. An emergency vet is a separate 24/7 facility for genuine crises: bloat, trauma, suspected poisoning, respiratory distress. Emergency clinics cost 2–3x more because they're staffed around the clock with specialized equipment for critical cases.

How much does an emergency vet visit cost?

An emergency vet visit typically costs $800–$1,500 on average once you factor in the exam, diagnostics, and initial treatment. The exam fee alone is $100–$250 before anything is done. Add bloodwork ($150–$350), IV fluids ($150–$400), and any procedures and the total rises quickly. Serious cases requiring surgery or hospitalization run $2,000–$8,000+. After-hours surcharges (50–100%) apply to all procedures at emergency clinics.

Can I go to urgent care instead of an emergency vet to save money?

For non-life-threatening issues, yes. Urgent care vet clinics (staffed by licensed vets, same-day appointments) typically charge $100–$200 for the visit versus $300–$600 at an emergency clinic. For anything that looks like a genuine emergency — suspected bloat, difficulty breathing, seizures, known toxin ingestion, uncontrolled bleeding — do not delay for cost reasons. These conditions deteriorate fast and the cost of delay is usually much higher than the cost of the ER visit.

How much does a sick dog visit cost?

A sick visit for a dog starts at $50–$100 for the exam fee but that's rarely the final bill. Most illness visits require diagnostics to figure out what's wrong. A basic blood panel runs $80–$200. If the vet suspects an internal issue, add X-rays ($100–$300) or an ultrasound ($250–$500). Prescriptions add another $20–$100. A typical sick visit that leads to a diagnosis runs $250–$700 total. Complex cases can run $1,000–$3,000 in diagnostics alone.
