Am I Overpaying for Vet Care?

Pick your pet type, procedure, and state. We'll compare your cost to what pet owners across the country actually pay.

Pick your pet type, procedure, and state to see how local vet costs compare to the national average.

How This Works

State averages come from AVMA Pet Owner Survey data, BLS regional cost-of-living indexes, and veterinary industry fee reports. Each state has a cost multiplier reflecting local wages, clinic rent, and market density. California runs 35% above the national average. Mississippi and Arkansas run 18–20% below.

Cat procedures generally run 15–25% less than dog procedures — smaller body mass means less anesthesia, shorter surgery time, and lower supply costs. The exception: dental work, where cats often need more extractions than dogs, narrowing the gap.

Urban vs. Rural Makes a Bigger Difference Than State

State averages mask wide within-state variation. A wellness exam in San Francisco runs $100–$130. Sacramento runs $70–$85. Both are California. In Texas, Houston and Dallas run $65–$80; rural West Texas runs $45–$60. If you're in a rural area, expect to pay below your state average. Major metro? Expect 15–30% above.

Emergency Clinics and Specialty Practices Price Differently

24/7 emergency clinics charge 50–100% above daytime rates by design. That's the cost of overnight staffing, not overcharging. University teaching hospitals charge specialist rates but often run 30–40% below private specialty clinics for the same procedures. If you're comparing your emergency bill to a daytime average, it'll look high — because it is, and that's expected.

Getting a Fair Price Going Forward

Ask for a written estimate before authorizing any procedure over $200. Every charge should be listed: exam fee, anesthesia, each medication, lab work. "Starting at" isn't an estimate. If your vet won't provide one, find a practice that will.

For spay, neuter, and vaccines: ASPCA-affiliated and humane society low-cost clinics use licensed staff and standard protocols. Savings of $100–$300 are common versus private practices. For anything requiring specialty care, veterinary teaching hospitals charge 30–50% less than private specialists.

Common Questions

# # Guidelines: # - 50-70 words (AI Overviews cite 50-70 word blocks most reliably — shorter gets skipped) # - Start with a direct answer sentence containing a specific number or fact # - Include at least 2 specific data points (dollar amounts, percentages, comparisons) # - Include location/context where applicable # - End with a personal-context hook ("use the calculator below to...") # - Do NOT use for H2s that label interactive form sections (calculator inputs, results) # - DO use for H2s that pose or imply a question readers would search for %>

Vet costs vary significantly by state — a wellness exam runs $50–$55 in Mississippi vs. $100–$130 in San Francisco. Select your state above to compare your procedure costs to both state and national averages.
