Dog Bloat Surgery Cost: $3,000–$8,000 (2026 Emergency Guide)
Bloat/GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus) is one of the most dangerous and expensive vet emergencies. The stomach fills with gas, then twists — cutting off blood supply. Surgery costs $3,000–$8,000 and must happen within hours of symptoms. Delay is fatal. Preventive gastropexy (stomach tacking surgery at time of spay/neuter) costs $400–$1,200 and dramatically reduces risk in prone breeds.

What Affects the Cost
- ▸ GDV is fatal without surgery. The stomach twists, cutting off blood supply. Every hour of delay significantly reduces survival odds.
- ▸ Most common in deep-chested large breeds: Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Dobermans, Weimaraners, Irish Setters. Great Danes have a 37% lifetime risk.
- ▸ Symptoms: unproductive retching, distended abdomen, restlessness, excessive drooling. This is an emergency — do not wait until morning.
- ▸ Surgery includes decompressing the stomach, untwisting it, and assessing any dead tissue that must be removed. The more tissue removed, the higher the cost and mortality risk.
- ▸ Prophylactic gastropexy (stomach tacking, done at spay/neuter or separately) prevents torsion and costs $400–$1,200. Strongly recommended for Great Danes and other high-risk breeds.
- ▸ After GDV surgery, hospitalization at $500–$1,500/day is typically required for 2–3 days, adding $1,000–$4,500 to the surgical bill.
