Dog Bloat (GDV) Emergency Cost: $3,000–$8,000 (2026)

Dog bloat — formally gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) — is a surgical emergency. The stomach fills with gas, then twists on itself, cutting off blood supply to surrounding organs. Without surgery, it's fatal within hours. GDV surgery costs $3,000–$8,000, plus 2–3 days of ICU hospitalization at $500–$1,500 per day. Total bills of $5,000–$10,000+ are common. If your dog is retching unproductively with a swollen belly, go to an emergency vet now.

What Affects the Cost

  • Surgery cost: $3,000–$8,000. Includes decompression, untwisting the stomach, assessing dead tissue, and gastropexy (stapling the stomach to prevent future torsion). More tissue damage = higher cost and lower survival.
  • ICU hospitalization: $500–$1,500 per day for 2–3 days post-surgery. Most dogs need 48–72 hours of intensive monitoring after GDV surgery. Add $1,000–$4,500 to the surgical bill.
  • Symptoms: unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up), distended abdomen that may look or feel tight, restlessness, drooling, and rapid breathing. A dog showing these symptoms needs to be seen within the hour.
  • High-risk breeds: Great Danes (37% lifetime risk), Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Irish Setters, and Gordon Setters. Any large, deep-chested dog is at risk.
  • Preventive gastropexy costs $400–$1,200 when done alongside spay/neuter and permanently prevents the stomach from twisting (though it doesn't prevent simple bloat/gas accumulation). Strongly recommended for Great Danes and other high-risk breeds.
  • Survival rate is 80–90% if surgery happens within 6 hours of symptom onset. It drops sharply after that. Dogs whose stomachs had more tissue death at surgery have worse outcomes regardless of timing.
  • GDV is not the same as simple bloat (gas accumulation without twisting). Simple bloat causes discomfort and can sometimes be treated with medication — but the two look identical from the outside. Do not wait to find out which one it is.

Common Questions

How much does dog bloat surgery cost?
Dog bloat (GDV) surgery costs $3,000–$8,000 for the procedure itself. Add 2–3 days of ICU hospitalization at $500–$1,500 per day and total bills commonly reach $5,000–$10,000+. Cost depends on how much tissue damage occurred when the stomach twisted and how long the dog went without treatment. Emergency clinics in high-cost states (California, New York, Massachusetts) run 30–40% above these averages.
What are the symptoms of dog bloat (GDV)?
Classic GDV symptoms: unproductive retching (the dog tries to vomit but nothing or very little comes up), a visibly distended or tight abdomen, restlessness and inability to get comfortable, excessive drooling, and rapid or labored breathing. The dog may look at its belly repeatedly. Symptoms come on suddenly and worsen fast. If you see unproductive retching with a swollen belly in a large dog, go to an emergency vet immediately — this is not a wait-and-see situation.
Can dog bloat resolve on its own without surgery?
Simple bloat (gas accumulation without torsion) can sometimes be treated with medication and stomach decompression without surgery. But GDV (when the stomach has twisted) always requires surgery — there is no other option. The problem is that both look identical from the outside. An X-ray at the emergency vet is the only way to tell the difference. Never assume it's simple bloat and wait it out. By the time you can tell for certain without an X-ray, surgery is more dangerous and more expensive.
Does pet insurance cover dog bloat surgery?
Yes, accident and illness pet insurance covers GDV surgery as a sudden, unexpected emergency. Most comprehensive plans reimburse 70–90% of the surgical and hospitalization cost after the deductible. With a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement, a $7,000 bill leaves you paying $1,600 instead of $7,000. Accident-only plans (which are cheaper) also cover GDV since it qualifies as an acute emergency. If you have a Great Dane or other high-risk breed, pet insurance for GDV alone pays for itself within years.
