Dog Bloat (GDV) Emergency Cost: 2026 Treatment Guide
Dog bloat — formally gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) — is a surgical emergency. The stomach fills with gas, then twists on itself, cutting off blood supply to surrounding organs. Without surgery, it's fatal within hours. GDV surgery costs $3,000–$8,000, plus 2–3 days of ICU hospitalization at $500–$1,500 per day. Total bills of $5,000–$10,000+ are common. If your dog is retching unproductively with a swollen belly, go to an emergency vet now.

What Affects the Cost
Vet procedure costs vary by pet size, location, and clinic type — specialty practices charge 40–80% more than general practitioners for the same procedure. Urban California and New York run 30–50% above national averages. Teaching hospitals and humane societies perform the same procedures at 30–50% below private vet prices. - ▸ Surgery cost: $3,000–$8,000. Includes decompression, untwisting the stomach, assessing dead tissue, and gastropexy (stapling the stomach to prevent future torsion). More tissue damage = higher cost and lower survival.
- ▸ ICU hospitalization: $500–$1,500 per day for 2–3 days post-surgery. Most dogs need 48–72 hours of intensive monitoring after GDV surgery. Add $1,000–$4,500 to the surgical bill.
- ▸ Symptoms: unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up), distended abdomen that may look or feel tight, restlessness, drooling, and rapid breathing. A dog showing these symptoms needs to be seen within the hour.
- ▸ High-risk breeds: Great Danes (37% lifetime risk), Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Irish Setters, and Gordon Setters. Any large, deep-chested dog is at risk.
- ▸ Preventive gastropexy costs $400–$1,200 when done alongside spay/neuter and permanently prevents the stomach from twisting (though it doesn't prevent simple bloat/gas accumulation). Strongly recommended for Great Danes and other high-risk breeds.
- ▸ Survival rate is 80–90% if surgery happens within 6 hours of symptom onset. It drops sharply after that. Dogs whose stomachs had more tissue death at surgery have worse outcomes regardless of timing.
- ▸ GDV is not the same as simple bloat (gas accumulation without twisting). Simple bloat causes discomfort and can sometimes be treated with medication — but the two look identical from the outside. Do not wait to find out which one it is.
