Common Bulldog Health Issues

These conditions drive vet costs most. Prevalence from AVMA surveys and breed club health studies.

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome

Prevalence: 65-80% $2,000–$5,000 if treated

Even worse than French Bulldogs. Most English Bulldogs have some degree of airway compromise. Surgical correction often needed.

Skin fold dermatitis

Prevalence: 40-50% $200–$1,000 if treated

Those wrinkles need constant cleaning. Infections in facial, tail, and body folds are almost guaranteed without maintenance.

Cherry eye

Prevalence: 10-15% $300–$800 if treated

Prolapsed third eyelid gland. Surgery usually required for both eyes.

Hip dysplasia

Prevalence: 70%+ $1,500–$6,000 if treated

Bulldogs have the worst hip scores of any breed. Over 70% are dysplastic per OFA data. Many are managed with pain medication rather than surgery.

Heat intolerance

Prevalence: nearly all $500–$3,000 if treated

Cannot regulate body temperature. Air conditioning is a medical necessity, not a luxury.

How Costs Change With Age

Vet spending is not flat. The first year is the most expensive. Ages 1–2 are cheapest. Senior years climb as monitoring and chronic conditions increase.

What Vets Say About Bulldogs

Bulldogs are the most expensive breed at the vet, period. They can't breathe right, can't cool down, can't give birth naturally (80%+ C-section rate), and over 70% have bad hips. Insurance companies charge the highest premiums for Bulldogs. If you're considering one, budget $1,500-$2,000/year minimum for vet care alone.

Is Pet Insurance Worth It for a Bulldog?

Insurance for a bulldog runs $55–$120/month ($660–$1,440/year). With a very high health risk profile, insurance is strongly recommended. A single major surgery can cost more than several years of premiums.
