Pet Wound Repair Cost: $200–$1,000 (2026)

A basic wound repair at the vet costs $200–$500. Deep lacerations, bite wounds, or injuries requiring drain placement push costs to $500–$2,500. The bill depends on wound size, location, contamination level, and whether sedation or full anesthesia is needed. Bite wounds are the most expensive because they almost always need drain placement and antibiotics.

What Affects the Cost

  • Basic wound care (clean, staple/suture, send home): $200–$500. Includes exam, local anesthetic, wound cleaning, and closure. Small lacerations on the body may need only staples.
  • Bite wounds: $500–$2,500. Bite wounds look small but extend deep. They require exploration under sedation, flushing, drain placement ($100–$300), and 7–14 days of antibiotics.
  • Sedation vs. anesthesia changes the cost. Sedation for wound repair: $50–$150. Full general anesthesia: $200–$500. Facial or complicated wounds usually require full anesthesia.
  • E-collar is mandatory ($10–$25). Pets will lick and chew at sutures, causing infection and dehiscence. Don't skip it.
  • Delayed treatment doubles the cost. Wounds seen within 6 hours can usually be closed primarily. After 6–12 hours, contamination makes primary closure risky, requiring more aggressive cleaning and sometimes delayed closure.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to get stitches for a dog or cat?
Wound repair with stitches costs $200–$1,000 at a vet in 2026. A straightforward laceration on the body (clean, suture, go home) runs $200–$500 including the exam and local anesthetic. Wounds requiring sedation or general anesthesia, drain placement, or multiple layers of closure run $500–$1,500. Emergency or after-hours wound repair adds 50–100% to these prices.
When does a pet wound need vet care vs. home treatment?
See a vet for: any wound longer than half an inch, any wound that is gaping open (edges don't touch), all puncture wounds and bite wounds (infection risk is high), wounds that won't stop bleeding after 10 minutes of direct pressure, wounds on the face, near joints, or on paw pads, and any wound where fat or muscle tissue is visible. Minor scrapes and superficial scratches can be cleaned with saline and monitored at home.
How long does it take for pet wounds to heal?
Sutured wounds typically heal in 10–14 days. Staples and sutures are removed at 10–14 days. Bite wounds with drains heal in 7–14 days after drain removal (drains come out at 3–5 days). Open wounds managed without closure take 2–6 weeks depending on size. Activity restriction and an e-collar are required during the entire healing period. Follow-up visits ($50–$80 each) are typically scheduled at 3 days and 10–14 days.
