Ear Infection Treatment Cost for Dogs & Cats (2026)

Ear infections are the #1 reason dog owners visit the vet. One episode costs $100–$300 and clears up in 7–14 days. The real expense is when it becomes chronic. Dogs with floppy ears, allergies, or who swim often can cycle through 3–4 infections a year, turning a minor problem into a $500–$1,200 annual cost.

What Affects the Cost

  • A typical visit includes: exam ($50–$80), ear cytology to identify bacteria or yeast ($25–$50), professional cleaning ($20–$40), and medicated ear drops ($25–$75). Total: $100–$250.
  • Chronic ear infections point to allergies. If your dog gets more than 2 ear infections per year, the ears aren't the real problem. Allergy testing ($200–$400) and treatment often stops the cycle.
  • Cats get ear infections less often than dogs, but when they do, ear mites are the most common cause in kittens and young cats. Treatment is simpler and cheaper ($80–$150).
  • Surgery (TECA) is the last resort for chronic, treatment-resistant cases. Total ear canal ablation runs $2,000–$5,000 per ear and permanently closes the ear canal.
  • OTC ear cleaners help prevent recurrence ($10–$20) but cannot treat an active infection. Skip the home remedies and see a vet.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to treat a dog ear infection?
A single dog ear infection episode costs $100–$300 at a private vet in 2026. This covers the exam fee ($50–$80), ear cytology ($25–$50), professional ear cleaning ($20–$40), and a 2-week course of medicated ear drops ($25–$75). If the infection is severe or involves the middle/inner ear, additional diagnostics and oral antibiotics push costs to $300–$600.
Why does my dog keep getting ear infections?
Recurring ear infections are almost always secondary to allergies (food or environmental). The allergy causes inflammation in the ear canal, creating a warm, moist environment where bacteria and yeast thrive. Breeds with floppy ears (Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, Labradors) and dogs that swim frequently are especially prone. Treating the ears without addressing the underlying allergy is like mopping the floor with the faucet running.
Can I treat my dog's ear infection at home?
No. You need a vet to determine whether the infection is bacterial, yeast, or mixed, and whether the eardrum is intact. Using the wrong medication or cleaning solution on a ruptured eardrum can cause permanent hearing loss. Over-the-counter ear cleaners are for maintenance and prevention, not treatment. Home remedies (apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, coconut oil) can worsen the infection and delay proper care.
How long does a dog ear infection take to heal?
A simple outer ear infection (otitis externa) typically clears in 7–14 days with proper medication. Middle ear infections (otitis media) take 4–6 weeks and may require oral antibiotics alongside ear drops. Your vet should recheck the ears at the end of treatment to confirm the infection is fully resolved. Stopping medication early because the dog seems better is the top reason infections recur.
