Flea & Tick Prevention Cost: $120–$250/Year for Dogs (2026)
Year-round flea and tick prevention costs $120–$250/year for dogs and $100–$200/year for cats. That's $10–$21/month. Skipping prevention to save money is a bad bet. One flea infestation costs $200–$500 to treat (pet treatment + home treatment), and a single tick-borne illness (Lyme, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis) runs $400–$2,000 in diagnostics and treatment.

What Affects the Cost
- ▸ Oral preventives (Simparica Trio, NexGard, Bravecto): $15–$25/month. Easiest to give, can't be washed off, and some cover heartworm and intestinal parasites too.
- ▸ Topical preventives (Frontline, Advantage, Revolution): $10–$18/month. Applied between shoulder blades monthly. Can be washed off if the pet swims or bathes frequently.
- ▸ Flea collars (Seresto): $50–$70 for 8 months of protection. One of the cheapest per-month options ($6–$9/month). Effective but has faced safety scrutiny.
- ▸ Year-round prevention is recommended even in cold climates. Fleas survive indoors through winter. Ticks are active above 35°F. One warm spell in January and unprotected pets get exposed.
- ▸ NEVER use dog flea products on cats. Permethrin (common in dog-only products) is toxic to cats and can be fatal. Always check the label.
